The SIGMA (SIGnal processing and MAchine learning) laboratory of ESPCI ParisTech is a leader in statistical machine learning. In addition to its pioneering work when the field emerged, it gave many methodological contributions to the field and was involved in a variety of original applications. During the past few years, the laboratory specialized in the modeling of complex systems, which led to very innovative applications in computer-aided diagnosis and therapy, computer-aided drug discovery, design of Intelligent prostheses, geolocalization of Alzheimer patients, etc.
The two-year position Is funded by the French Natiooal Research Agency (ANR) In the framework of the FLASH project ("Complex Systems" program), whose purpose is the real-time prediction of flash floods. The consortium features laboratories that are experts in hydrology and hydrogeology, and laboratories with expertise in machine learning. The french weather forecasts service (Meteo France) and the french flood forecasting agency (SCHAPI) are also partners of the project. The research project of the postodoctoral researcher will be the application of kernel methods (SVM regression) to flash flood prediction, from data bases provided by the partners; the main challenge is the prediction of floods in the absence of rainfall forecasts. Another major challenge will be the introduction of expert knowledge into the kernel models.
