The department of Industrial Design, at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), is inviting applications for 15 positions for its Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) program in User System Interaction (USI). Candidates should hold a Master's degree related to the topic of the course, e.g., computing, electrical engineering, psychology, human factors, industrial design, etc.
Positions are for two years, during which participants in the USI program receive a full salary. The program features specialized courses relating to the design of User System Interaction given by leading experts in the field from various countries and a 9-month internship in leading edge technology industries. The working language is English. USI participants represent different cultures and intellectual disciplines. As a result, special emphasis is paid on multi-disciplinary team work and developing professional skills. The USI program has a strong record of employment for its graduates, and a rich publication record and presence in the field.
USI Program Description
The program starts with fourteen months of multidisciplinary course work. The course work is structured into modules of one or two weeks in which topics from different disciplines are taught. These modules are clustered in five blocks: design methodology, research methodology, interactive technology, software engineering, and understanding users. This part of the curriculum includes interactive workshops, working lectures, practical training, individual and group assignments, self-study, experiment set-ups and laboratory work for design and evaluation. Furthermore, professional development courses are an important part of the curriculum (interview skills, presentation skills, theatre skills, etc.).
In the last part of the regular curriculum trainees work in small project teams on a design case, in which they apply their knowledge and skills to a concrete design problem relevant to industry and to the research field.
In the second part of the program trainees work for nine months as independent professionals on a large project assignment in industry. These projects are defined and conducted on demand in companies or institutions. They are co-supervised by coaches from the host organization and the university.
Career Perspective
USIs are trained in user-centered design methodologies and related topics from engineering and social sciences. They are highly skilled in identifying how a system should support users at work or at home with their information, communication and entertainment activities, and in designing such systems to support a rewarding user experience and prevent usability problems. In short, the USI designer's field of work is the design and development trajectory of user system interactions for new products, services, and systems. With this background, such designers become part of multidisciplinary design teams within industry, business services, or government institutions.
Examples of positions: interaction designer, usability engineer, usability consultant, human factors engineer, information architect, customer insight specialist, user experience designer, etc.
